The dielectric constant measures the material’s ability to store electrical energy, while the power factor assesses the dissipation of energy. Both parameters are essential for ensuring the reliable performance of the insulation in electrical applications. In general, a low dissipation factor (A/C loss) and an intermediate permittivity are desirable. By using a capacitance bridge to measure the capacitance of the specimen, several other electrical characteristics can be calculated:
- Dielectric constant
- Power/dissipation factor
- Phase angle
- Loss index
- Loss angle
