Thermal Shock
Thermal FOR: Insulation $1,970Temperature cycling can cause rapid degradation of wire/cable insulation integrity. This can manifest and insulation splits, cracks, and/or delamination. Often an overlooked test method for assessment, the thermal shock test proves and excellent means of assessing the construction quality of a wire or cable.
The test focuses on a single high-temperature to low-temperature exposure and the impact this can have on the wire insulation. Lower-quality materials and constructions will fail quickly with this assessment technique.
Parameters that can be adjusted for this test include:
- Exposure Temperatures
- Exposure Durations
- Number of Specimens
- Post-test Analysis (pass/fail conditions)
Procedure
- Perform visual examination of the specimen. Record any observed defects.
- Perform insulation voltage withstand test on the specimen to specified voltage. Note any failed specimen.
- Wrap specimen around mandrel and place into oven for specified duration.
- After removal from the oven, place the specimen into the low-temperature freezer for specified duration.
- Remove specimen from the freezer and perform a visual examination of the specimen. Note any insulation cracks or defects.
- Report the elevated exposure temperature and duration, low-temperature freezer temperature and specimen exposure duration, and any observed insulation defects.
