Scrape Abrasion At Temperature

One of the most common means for wire failure is through insulation chafing. In operating conditions, wires/cables are exposed to various sharp edges on aircraft that can quickly deteriorate the insulation integrity. This test assesses the wire/cable's insulation durability to sharp edges at elevated temperatures.

The sample is placed into an elevated temperature enclosure and abraded until failure. The failure is identified via a detection circuit connected to the scrape abrasion jig and sample under test. Once conductivity is detected between the two, the test is halted and results recorded.

When this test is performed on shielded cables/harnesses, the typical test modification is to attach the detection circuit to the sample shield. This can be changed based on the client's need.

There are several parameters that can be adjusted to the client's particular needs, including:

Procedure

  1. Perform visual examination of the sample. Record any damage or defects.
  2. Place sample into the test enclosure and turn on test enclosure heat source.
  3. Wait for temperature to stabilize for 5 minutes at the target temperature before starting abrasion.
  4. Start abrasion of the test sample.
  5. Once electrical conductivity is detected between the test jig and sample, halt test.
  6. Move sample such that an undamaged portion of insulation is under the abrasion test jig.
  7. Complete 10 trials on sample.
  8. Report the average, standard deviation, and test conditions for sample tested.
