Method 4.4.5.1 is a salt water immersion test. A length of completed cable is subjected to a 30-day immersion test. The cable is attached to a fixture so that the exposed ends will not be immersed in sea water.
The cable is immersed for 16 hours and removed for a period of 8 hours. This sequence is repeated 30 times. No fresh water rinse is permitted during the 30 cycles.
At the conclusion of this test, the cable is required to comply with the electrical requirements specified. This test simulates the severe marine exposure conditions that shipboard cables may encounter in naval service.
