AS5942 Method 1 (Section 4.1, Adherence Test) evaluates the durability of identification markings applied to electrical insulating materials. Six separate marks on one specimen are placed on a flat surface and rubbed with a weighted eraser or wool felt pad.
A 2-pound (±0.5 pound) weight is applied through a pencil eraser (regular grade, pink color) or optional wool felt pad. One rub consists of placing the weighted eraser on the sample and rubbing at least a 3/8 inch length along the entire marking. The marking is subjected to 20 rubs.
Each character must be uniform, clear, and easily identified as an accurate duplication of the printing type after testing, with no evidence of damage to the insulating material. This test is critical for verifying the permanence of wire and component identification markings.
