The humidity resistance test seeks to evaluate the impact of prolonged heat and humidity exposure to wire/cable insulation. This accelerated environmental test is meant to simulate the environmental conditions in Severe Wind and Moisture Prone (SWAMP) areas on aircraft to analyze the possible detrimental effects. A sample is considered to have failed if there has been significant degradation of insulation electrical properties (insulation resistance, dielectric strength, etc.); the particular method for determining pass/fail varies from test specification to specification.

At the end of this test, Lectromec delivers a report on the test conditions, post-humidity exposure test results, and any other observations.

Procedure

  1. Perform visual examination of the specimen. Record any defects.
  2. Perform wet dielectric voltage withstand test. Discard any failed samples.
  3. (Specification dependent) Place the specimen on a mandrel loaded on each end to keep the specimen taught.
  4. Place the specimen into the humidity chamber. Leave the specimen in the enclosure for the specified duration.
  5. Remove the specimen and perform a visual examination. Record any insulation degradation.
  6. Perform insulation resistance test on the specimen.
  7. Report the exposure conditions and duration, insulation resistance results, and any observed changes in the specimen.
