In practice, the energy stored in capacitors will dissipate and discharge through the dielectric. The leakage rate is based on a combination of factors that include: the dielectric material, component age, use, temperature, and applied voltage. The DC leakage test is a test that helps to identify the long-term power storage capacity of capacitors and is often included as part of capacitor qualification test plans.
In the test, the rated voltage is applied to the capacitor until charged. The voltage is then removed and the capacitor discharge rate is then measured with specialized test equipment. This test may be performed at ambient or elevated temperatures.
Our Process
Perform visual examination of the specimen. Record any observed defects.
Attach the specimen to a well regulated DC power supply with an electrometer in parallel with the power supply.
Apply the specified voltage for several minutes, then remove the DC power supply from the circuit.
Record the voltage across the specimen for several minutes.
Report the DC leakage over the test duration, the specimen conditioning (if any), and test conditions.
