This test determines the corona (partial discharge) inception and extinction voltage of cable specimens as specified in MIL-DTL-17. Corona discharge is a localized electrical discharge that occurs when the electric field strength exceeds the ionization threshold of the surrounding medium, but does not result in complete dielectric breakdown.
The specimen is subjected to gradually increasing voltage while monitoring for partial discharge activity using sensitive detection equipment. The voltage at which discharge activity begins (inception) and ceases (extinction) is recorded. Testing provides data on the insulation system’s performance under the specific environmental conditions encountered in service.
