Method 4.8.9 is a cold working test at minus 4 +/- 4F (minus 20 +/- 2C) that determines the ability of completed cable, which is not intended to be flexed during use, to withstand a traveling bend at a reduced temperature such as might be encountered during shipboard construction or repair.
The specimen consists of a 20 +/- 1 foot length of completed cable. The apparatus includes a refrigeration chamber for supporting the required temperature conditions.
The cable specimen is conditioned at the low temperature and then subjected to a bending operation simulating the handling that would occur during installation in cold conditions aboard naval vessels.
