The Abrasion Resistance test evaluates an insulation’s ability to endure rotational abrasion.
The insulation sample is hung over a rotating cylindrical fixture equipped with two abrading elements separated 180°. The abrading elements are made from square tool bits which have been ground such that only one 90° edge of each abrades the test sample.
The sample is secured in place on one end while the other is attached to a weight and allowed to hang over the rotating fixture. The test fixture is then set to rotate, abrading the sample until electrical contact is made between the rotating fixture and sample conductor, in other words: until the insulation has been worn through.
