Comparative Analysis
Wire selection for a particular application can be a time intensive process. Selection of the right wire for the particular application to maintain device reliability and prevent the potential for catastrophic failure (in case of signal quality degradation or electrical arcing for power wires) can be difficult.
Lectromec will work with you to develop a test plan based on your requirements. The overall process involves the five steps described below:
Step #1: Requirements
We start with determining your operation and storage conditions. This includes the following considerations:
- How much flexing will occur while in-service?
- Is the operation/storage temperature cyclical and what is the endurance level needed?
- What chemicals might the wire/cable be exposed to during operation?
- What is the operation voltage?
- Are there other environmental or operational characteristics such as exposure to direct sunlight, cleaning, chaffing, etc. that may impact life?
Step #2: Identify candidate wires and cables
Lectromec reviews the requirements identified in Step#1 and seeks suppliers that claim to meet those performance requirements. After suitable options have been identified, Lectromec works with the client to identify the best options and reduce the number of tests necessary.
Step #3: Test selection
There are hundreds of wire/cable test standards and it is not economically viable to perform all. The test selection considers the following:
- Measureable results
- Whether the test covers environmental conditions
- Whether the test goes beyond the test specs (for new materials, it may be desireable to see if they can perform better)
- Longevity
Step #4: Test Performance
Depending on the type and quantity of testing, the test analysis can take as little as three weeks. However, if the testing includes multiple samples taken through life cycling, the testing phase will take longer. During this process, Lectromec maintains regular communication with the client.
Step #5: Review and Selection
Once all of the data has been gathered, a final report is compiled detailing the test, the equipment, and results (if needed, equipment calibration information will also be provided). After delivery, a final project meeting is held to discuss any technical issues and any last modifications to the final report. For those components that have successfully completed an industry test standard, Lectromec will supply a certificate of completion.
