Method 4.8.17 tests the permanence of printing on the cable jacket to determine the ability of printed information on jacketing material to remain legible in the presence of repeated abrasion.
The specimen consists of a piece of completed cable of sufficient length for the test. The apparatus includes an abrading machine that supports and secures the specimen straight and horizontal, and abrades the specimen printed identification by means of a motor-driven transverse action.
This test ensures that cable identification markings on the outer jacket remain readable throughout the cable’s service life, which is essential for maintenance and damage control aboard naval vessels.
