Method 4.8.16 tests the permanence of printing on conductor insulation to determine the ability of printed information on insulated conductors to remain legible in the presence of repeated abrasion.
Specimens consist of single insulated conductors of sufficient length for the test. For cables containing four or fewer conductors, one specimen is removed from each insulated conductor. For cables with more than 4 but fewer than 21 conductors, a representative sampling is used.
The test uses an abrading method to repeatedly rub the printed identification markings on the insulated conductors, simulating the handling and wear that would occur during cable installation and service life aboard naval vessels.
