Method 4.8.3 evaluates the bending endurance of completed shipboard cable. The test determines the cable’s ability to withstand repeated smooth and continuous reversing bending motion while subjected to a specified temperature.
The specimen consists of a 30 +/- 6 inch length of completed cable. Specimen conductor ends are electrically interconnected such that a single series electrical circuit is formed by the conductors. The two end conductors of this series circuit are connected for monitoring.
The cable is subjected to a specified number of bend cycles at a controlled rate and radius, while electrical continuity is monitored throughout the test. Failure is indicated by an open circuit or other specified electrical degradation.
